Café Berlin has been serving authentic German cuisine on Capitol Hill since 1985. It occupies the ground floor of three townhouses whose front yards serve as Biergarten for outdoor dining. The interior features a small bar and two cozy dining rooms. The restaurant is located within a short walking distance of Union Station and the U.S. Capitol. It draws politicians, congressional staffer, and tourists as well a loyal following of neighborhood residents. The traditional dishes are authentically prepared with lighter touch by chefs with extensive experience in German cuisine. In addition to the regular menu, the restaurant offer seasonally changing menus that feature fresh asparagus in the spring, salads and light fares in the summer, Bavarian dishes during Oktoberfest in the fall, and wild game in the winter. Desserts which are freshly made in-house include apple strudel, black forest cake, and luscious cream tortes. The bar offers a selection of imported German beers and wines.

    I have been coming for the Christmas goose dinner for years because my mother (now deceased) used to make a Christmas goose every year. Everything was wonderful with the exception of the Christmas goose. For the past two years, the goose has been over cooked and I was served a tough leg with very little of the breast, the most tender part. Maybe I was just spoiled from my mother’s goose, and I am thankful that it still served. The salmon salad was wonderful as was the Rumtopf. I don’t mind coming down on the metro from Baltimore for this holiday meal.

    Excellent as always! Brought two out of town guests who loved it as well and tried some different items that were perfectly prepared. The curry sausage, schnitzel, and risotto all highly recommend.

    It was my friend’s first time having German food — and she loved all of it (from apps to entree to Spezi to dessert)!! Thank you for making her first experience a memorable one! Wunderbar!

    I had eaten here before, but it had been a few years. I brought a group of 5 from out of state for dinner. What a wonderful experience. The waitstaff was wonderful and the service was a 10! Kuddos to the chef! The food was as wonderful as I remember! A definite dining experience you do not want to miss. Can't wait to come back the next time I am in D.C.

    Enjoyed our first visit and we’d like to go again someday. We concentrated on sausages this time and want to do schnitzel the next time. The sausages with red cabbage and “German mac and cheese” worked for us, though in hindsight might have substituted potatoes, and could have used a lot more mustard from the get go instead of needing to ask for it. Definitely would order more potato pancakes. House beer was excellent accompaniment.
