Pat 'Pops' Newland has been serving authentic British fish and chips in London since 1945, and from this he has recreated a restaurant serving one of Britain's best-loved dishes in a friendly setting, surrounded by authentic 1940s/50s memorabilia lovingly curated by Pops himself. Our menu includes sustainably-caught mouth-watering fresh fish cooked in crunchy batter, served with golden chips and classic mushy peas, prepared on the premises by our onsite fishmonger. Poppies in Hanbury Street was Pop’s first restaurant and the one where the journey began. The retro-diner and takeaway is close to Pop’s heart as it brought 70year old Pat out of retirement. Pop’s career in the fish and chip business started in 1952 when, aged 11, he got a job on Roman Road cutting up copies of The Daily Mirror to wrap fish and chips in. The shops are filled with retro memorabilia from Pop’s childhood, The uniforms channel a 1950s vibe, and the music is tailored to each shop. Dining in one of Pops restaurants is an experience with retro vibes and iconic looks from the decades. For instance, Seventies Formica and Anaglypta wallpaper will be just one of many pieces of kitsch decor on show.

We went for a late Saturday lunch and it was fantastic. We had steamed mussels in the white wine sauce which were amazing. The four of us polished off a whole kilo. We all had the classic fish n chips- a mix of cod and haddock. The fish was fresh, not greasy and crispy. The chips were classic thick cut chip shop chips. The atmosphere was lovely and cheerful. I’m in London for 5 days and may try to visit again. Definitely worth a visit.

Great place.came here before with my gf,but this time we came for business xmas party.food as usual the best.my boss loved it and we all enjoyed.the asado steak is a must try and the buenos ared cocktail.we will back for sure
