A French-Japanese bistro in the Arts District of Downtown Los Angeles. Reservations are always recommended, but we are often able to accommodate walk-ins as well. While we love dogs, we can only accept trained service animals (not emotional support animals) both in our dining room as well as on our outdoor patio. We appreciate your understanding.

Bar Chelou is a neo-bistro that is both a distillation of Chef Doug Rankin's broad gastronomic interests and a deeply personal expression of his individualistic style. 'Chelou' (French slang for ‘strange’ or ‘unexpected’) is both the name and unifying theme of the restaurant, which draws from a range of culinary traditions and service styles to create something personal, novel, and fun. The restaurant is located within the Pasadena Playhouse complex. If you plan to visit the Playhouse after dinner, please book a 5:30p reservation to ensure ample timing for your dinner. We also offer concession cocktails before a showing and during intermission. NEED TO KNOWWine corkage is $30 per 750ml bottle with no limit; we do not offer corkage for wines featured on our wine list. Open for indoor and outdoor dining and curbside takeout. Outdoors dining is subject to the weather. We have heaters but not for all tables. Please dress warmly. If there is a chance of rain we will have to cancel.Shiro has been named the Zagat Guide's number one restaurant and is consistently one of the highest rated establishments in the guide (#5 in 2011; #2 for service in 2013). Shiro is summed up by it's ingredients. Menu items are driven by the best available, nothing less is acceptable. For over 35 years, diners have enjoyed our French and Pacific Rim inspired menu. First time to this restaurant but will for sure not the last. Food was fresh and tasty. Favorite dishes are pork chop and duck, I’m drooling already talking about it

Was there for brunch before a show at the Amundsen theater. We had settled on two menu items to order and then our server told us they were both not available. It was one substitute. Quiche Lorraine. It was good but small portion. We ordered as an appetizer, roasted brussels sprouts with balsamic glaze, goat cheese, and dried apricots. This was the star of the meal! our waiter was very attentive and personable.

It’s always a great experience. The menu is small, but everything is delicious. The owners are nice, and the work they put into the patio is simply amazing. It is so beautiful, and the vibe and music are fantastic.
