Napa Valley Bistro was opened in 2013 by chefs Bernardo Ayala and Ernesto Martinez, (also co-owner of Market in St. Helena). Their friendship and working relationship, which has lasted over 20 years was so successful, they decided to pool their resources and stake a claim in downtown Napa's expanding culinary scene. Their aim was to create their own version of classic world cuisine in a comfortable space where family and community could gather for any occasion. Chef Hakan is a second-generation baker who learned his craft in his uncle's bakery in Istanbul. His love for baking started out with making pastries and sourdough bread at first. Hit by a pizza obsession later on, similar to Anatolian flatbread, Chef Hakan studied, experimented, and observed various pizza-making methods. He participated in pizza expos, visited pizza restaurants, and tasted different styles of pizza around the world until buying a nice wood-fired pizza oven and creating his own recipe.Then time came for Hakan to open up his restaurant. Previously known as Napa Baking Company is now serving in Napa as Croccante. Chef Hakan offers long-fermented Pan-style Detroit and Chicago thin tavern style pizza. Croccante currently holds an award from 50 top pizza, as one of the 50 top pizzerias in USA in the "excellent" category as well as a nomination by SF Chronicle as One of the Top Pizzerias in the Bay Area.

I loved everything about the place except for one disappointing detail. Despite mentioning it was my husband’s birthday ahead, we were not offered a nice table to mark the occasion. To make matters worse, as we were joyfully chatting over dinner, we were told we would need to vacate the table by a certain time. From such an upscale establishment, I expected much better attention to detail and hospitality.

We had Christmas dinner here, and it did not disappoint! Absolutely delicious. Two of us had the squid ink linguini with mixed shellfish and my husband had the chicken parm. Portions were quite small on the linguini dish and I kind of wish our meals could have included a salad or something, but that’s ok. Service was extremely quick and super-friendly. I would love to go back if we’re in the area again!

We had bahn mi sandwiches, noodle salad and the oxtail pappardelle. The pasta was the winner of the dishes - delicious and comfort food! That said the other dishes were also great. Noodle salad was fresh and flavorful. Bahn mi sandwiches were chowed down by our guests. Great experience with excellent service and an ecclectic menu.
