After closing for 2 weeks for an interior refurb the pub now has a fresh and clean new look. The creation of a proper snug is part of the change and is available for private hire for small gatherings or family occasions. The rear barn has also undergone refurbishment and is now a wonderful room dating back to the 15th Century with oak beams and flagstone floor folding doors open out on to the rear courtyard and river Stour beyond. The barn forms part of the restaurant but can also be made available for small functions and parties of up to 20 - 25 people.

Our magical conservatory restaurant is set amid Updown’s rambling grounds. Dine under the grape vines surrounded by beautiful 17th century brick and watch the chefs in the open kitchen tending to the wood fired grill and original farm house bread oven. The restaurant has been completely transformed by owners Ruth and Oli to be heated and fully enclosed and is open year round.Menus will be small, hyper seasonal and use the best of local and European produce and change on regular basis to reflect what’s best. Everything is cooked over wood in the open kitchen. There is a short list of exciting wines of limited availability, local beers and seasonal cocktails.On Wednesday nights in place of our à la carte we cook a Steak Night menu , priced at £30 per person for 3 courses. On Sunday nights the restaurant is closed but we serve a light supper for hotel guests in the Farmhouse.

Sète (named after the coastal town in France) is a wine bar, shop, and kitchen. Our doors opened to the wine bar in October 2022 and the restaurant and garden in July 2023. The seasonal menu focuses on modern European cooking with a heavy French influence, highlighting the best produce Kent has to offer. Wine is certainly at the heart of what we love.     Lovely night out with friends. The lychee martini is amazing - I've had it several times now. This time I went for the butternut wellington which was outstanding. Staff were all very friendly. Overall 10/10

    My favourite restaurant in the area. I love the atmosphere particularly, and their Christmas tree is better than Trafalgar Square’s! We all had the winter set menu. Pork pate, beef and pheasant pie, and a delicious rice pudding crème brûlée! We’ll be back next year when there is an occasion to mark.

    It was our first visit and it was delightful. The host was very friendly and had a nice chat with my husband about football. As it was our first visit, he explained how the small plate system worked. The young lady serving us was very friendly and efficient. We had some lovely food. Even though they are small plates, we had enough to eat. The chocolate and ginger tart was a singing combination!!! Will definitely go again.
