After closing for 2 weeks for an interior refurb the pub now has a fresh and clean new look. The creation of a proper snug is part of the change and is available for private hire for small gatherings or family occasions. The rear barn has also undergone refurbishment and is now a wonderful room dating back to the 15th Century with oak beams and flagstone floor folding doors open out on to the rear courtyard and river Stour beyond. The barn forms part of the restaurant but can also be made available for small functions and parties of up to 20 - 25 people.

Our magical conservatory restaurant is set amid Updown’s rambling grounds. Dine under the grape vines surrounded by beautiful 17th century brick and watch the chefs in the open kitchen tending to the wood fired grill and original farm house bread oven. The restaurant has been completely transformed by owners Ruth and Oli to be heated and fully enclosed and is open year round.Menus will be small, hyper seasonal and use the best of local and European produce and change on regular basis to reflect what’s best. Everything is cooked over wood in the open kitchen. There is a short list of exciting wines of limited availability, local beers and seasonal cocktails.On Wednesday nights in place of our à la carte we cook a Steak Night menu , priced at £30 per person for 3 courses. On Sunday nights the restaurant is closed but we serve a light supper for hotel guests in the Farmhouse.

The seasonal menus focus on provenance, showcasing the best of local Kentish ingredients, sourced directly from local farms and producers. Modern restaurant with a good buzz and helpful attentive staff. The food is plentiful and well presented. The wings were crispy in a delicious sauce, we had the combo. Crackling was crispy and puffy with spicy seasoning, the smoked meats ribs and sausage were flavoursome and still juicy, the ribs and pork belly were perfectly rendered. Plenty for 2-3 people. The lettuce skewer with kimchi and sarasser was unusual but a great accompaniment.

The food was amazing. Every bite was such a perfect mouthful. The service was perfect. They left you alone but attentive at the same time. It’s a hidden Gem. I didn’t know it existed until we saw it on Facebook. Will be going back in a few weeks.
