J. Gilbert's is an "upscale casual" steakhouse serving prime-aged beef cooked over a mesquite wood-fired grill. Guests enjoy various cuts of steak, fresh seafood (including award-winning crab cakes) & other house made favorites like the Maytag Bleu potato chips & Chocolate Velvet Cake. The cozy atmosphere includes fire side dining, rich wood, brick & soft lighting where you can enjoy a quiet table or host a large party.     First visit to J. Gilbert’s during Restaurant Week and it is now a “favorite”. Ordered from the 3-course menu and every item was amazing — Crab cakes (lump crab), bourbon shrimp, filet Mignon, best asparagus ever. The carrot cupcake exceeded expectations.

    Went for Restaurant Week and both got the 3 course meal for $50. Salad, filet mignon and crème boulet. Was perfectly prepared but had to take the desert home as first 2 portions filled us. Although the restaurant appeared near capacity, the design and layout of the seating makes for quiet dining. Very happy with our dinner and will return for next occasion.

    We visited for Restaurant Week after not eating at J Gilberts for a couple of years. The food was good, but the steak was just okay. It was not excellent prime quality; it was just okay. The salad, sides, and dessert were good. The most disappointing thing about our visit was that we asked our server which bourbon was used for their Old Fashioneds. She didn't answer, and we said, just a basic bourbon will be fine. When the bill came, we were charged for a top-shelf, expensive bourbon that is a sipping bourbon, not a mixing bourbon. We asked if that was their basic bourbon for Old Fashioneds, and the server said that is what you asked for. There were four of us who knew the conversation. It was a turn-off. We will probably not go back. With the meat not being great, and mixing a high-end bourbon in a mixed drink and charging handsomely for it, it was disappointing.

    We were treated very well, iit was our anniversary dinner. Everyone was so friendly and professional. The food was outstanding, as always. The wedge salad is the best in the city, the steak was done perfect, and the crème brule is the best.

    After many visits to Gilbert’s over the past several years and dozens of great meals, last night’s experience with another couple was my worst fine restaurant dining experience ever. The meal was served more than an hour after ordering and each of the meals was a totally unappetizing presentation. Jumble of small pieces for the seafood platter and 2-8 oz filets that appeared to be much smaller. The steaks and seafood were all extremely overcooked and proved to be dry, cold and could not be eaten. The server was embarrassed and very apologetic but shouldn’t have brought these plates to the table. I have no idea what was going on in the kitchen but they were clearly overwhelmed and not able to pay attention to the orders. I’m not giving up on Gilbert’s but it may be quite a while before I have the courage to try again. Certainly a while before I bring good friends with confidence we will have a great experience!

    We generally very much enjoy our meals here; however, a few things contributed to not such a great experience this visit. It was Restaurant Week (RW). The online RW menu for didn’t match the offering in-house, and an item we particularly wanted was not being offered. The salmon had to be sent back as it was undercooked and raw on the inside - it was tasty when it returned. Where the experience really took a turn was when we asked for the dessert to go - it took roughly 30 minutes from that ask which was after we had finished our meal and plates were taken, 20 minutes from when we fully paid our bill, for the desserts to finally arrive.
