The name of the restaurant is inspired by the Legend of Janare of Benevento. Strega means ‘witch’ in Italian and Benevento is considered the “city of witches”. At Strega, our mission is to transport our guests to the Italy we cherish. Drawing inspiration from traditions across the Italian peninsula, we are dedicated to crafting an authentic Italian experience. With a profound appreciation and understanding of Italy’s rich history and culinary heritage, we prioritize using imported Italian products and are committed to maintaining authenticity in our recipes and menu selections. At Strega, we believe that cooking with seasonal, authentic ingredients means there is not need for unnecessary embellishment - our food tastes great, is fresh, and at its peak. Relaunching in 2016, The Anchor effortlessly aligned with a revitalized Downtown New Haven, in the vibrant midst of Yale University. The bar and eatery simultaneously honors, embraces, and reflects the City’s economic, social and intellectual diversity—representing a cultural cocktail of town and gown immediacy of a deadline. The Anchor’s new owner, Yale alumnus Karl Franz Williams’ plan is to preserve the best and most recognizable aspects of the restaurant’s former incarnation and create something evocative and timeless.

    We love this place, but be ready for a whole new menu! We used to love the duck nachos now replaced with duck tostados...they are good but not like the nachos. That could be personal though. The place is still wonderful. Our waiter was amazing a lot of fun. It is now owned by the same restaurant group that owns Union League, but still nothing like Union League-the atmosphere is still the same.

    The petite filet, garlic mashed potatoes, and creamed spinach was excellent - as usual!!! The service (by Lexi) was also terrific - not too overbearing and just right. Lexi was terrific!!! Thank you, Iron Chef Chop House for making our Christmas holidays even merrier!!!

    Best restaurant in the state ; well Prepared delicious food, casual elegant setting. It can get a bit loud- noise dampeners please. But I do love this place

    Despite offering reservations in the “Bar” area. The bartender said “I know what it says online but we don’t do that”. Despite this, they did find a table for us to sit at and were accommodating when our party unexpectedly grew.
