From building society, to bank, to BEAR – this ornate old banking hall site on Derby’s Iron Gate stood empty and forgotten for 9 long years… until we came along.BEAR Iron Gate, Derby sits slap-bang in the centre of the city’s iconic and beautiful Cathedral Quarter; the original hotspot for high-quality food and drink. Opening in 2017 following the success of our Uttoxeter store, the progression to Derby seemed natural for BEAR, as our two founders spent a lot of time in the city as teens, so they have loads of fun memories attached to the place.

The Friary is situated just on the edge of Derby's lively city center. This bright, vibrant and fast paced venue is the place to be for students and revellers alike. The structure is traditional but the Decor is very, very modern. Purple walls with orange borders and the Submarine grey fire place in the games room with astro-turf may give you a heavy indication that at this venues core, it's a Sports Bar but you'd be wrong. The Menu matches the ambiance of the Friary perfectly, everything you'll need for a visit here. Wings, Sharing trays and bites such as the Sloppy Joe Hash Brown Bars which are hash browns topped with beef in a smoky BBQ sauce, bacon, grated cheese and spring onion. Fancy a sweet dessert? Exciting times here at The Dovecote, we are having a refurbishment!This affects reservations made between 17th Feb and 7th March, Opening hours will remain the same, however we will be moving the restaurant into our Granary Loft function suite while we carry out the works. Access will be through our function entrance.Unfortunately during this period there will be no disabled access or disabled toilets.We apologise for any inconvenience and thank you for your patience and understanding.We are looking forward to welcoming you all back, customers old and new and hope you love the refurbishment as much as we do!

Had the 9 course taster menu. Each course was excellent, although it was funny that dashi featured in the first three courses. It didn’t matter and we would have gladly drunk gallons. The only picky point was that I told them I am gluten intolerant on the booking and when we arrived, but still got given multiple courses with gluten ingredients. If I had assumed that they were correct, it could have been messy.

Absolutely nothing to criticise. We went with our 2 young children and every meal was delicious, staff were nice, service was good and the price wasn't bad either. Can't complain!
