You’ll need to be in on a few secrets to visit Coal & Cedar. This hidden speakeasy has no signage and no doorbell. Instead, you’ll need to text a special code to a number on the wall and a host will open the door and usher you inside. Rest assured, it’s worth the effort, having just won Best Regional bar in Australia 2016.Once inside, you’ll discover a moody, eclectic cocktail bar with an urban edge. Exposed brick walls and dark timber are complemented by dim lighting from vintage chandeliers. Holding fewer than 60 guests, it’s this old world ambience that sets Coal & Cedar apart from Newcastle’s bar scene.Ethan and Ryan are the team behind the venture. In 2014, they packed their bags and moved from Sydney to the state’s largest regional city to work on their new dream bar. Foghorn Brewery was born of a dream to make craft beer the way it ought to be made—from grain to glass all under one roof.The historic building in King Street had been abandoned for several years when we first set foot inside. In that dusty old warehouse, we saw the potential to create something really special.And so it was that Newcastle’s first modern craft brewery opened its doors in April 2015. The town’s industrial roots have played a big part in shaping the unique character of Foghorn Brewery. Built from the ground up, this art deco era warehouse with exposed roof trusses now houses a custom 1800 litre brewery.

Not too busy. Good food, beer and cocktails - recommend Bay Breeze and the Tasting for 2. We watched the tables being cleaned but the table we sat at was still sticky like some cafes are.

I just enjoyed a wonderful boozy breakfast brunch at Autumn Rooms. Perhaps the best brunch I’ve ever eaten from the Bloody Mary to the sublime Açai Bowl (particular credit to the young man on the team who made granola that sings 😊) and finishing with a good long black. Sat out the back in a shaded, spacious area with lots of plants. Service staff didn’t have notebooks but always had smiles. Thanks for making my birthday one to remember. If only you could do something about me turning 54 🤔. All good wishes, Sal
