Believed to date back to the 17th century the Horse & Groom was originally used to house local farmer workers, with the increase in horse drawn traffic using the old Hastings Road the property was utilised to offer weary travellers a place to rest and stable their horse ready for their onward journey. It then, and has to this date, become known as the Horse and Groom . Free of tie, the pub now offers the traditional country pub fair, set in the glorious surroundings of Rushlake Green, with its picturesque village properties encircling the village green, centre of the villages attraction and host to many winter and summer events. The pub with it’s large private gardens offers a friendly and secure environment for families to enjoy beautiful views over the adjoining rolling Sussex countryside.

Given the provenance, the kitchen predominantly cooks British food, occasionally dipping into other cuisines to provide a vehicle for flavours – nettle gnocchi for example, or poached oyster with wild boar chorizo.WE wanted a unique fun and informal restaurant, to offer their Crowborough Estate’s produce from. We enjoyed a very nice roast dinner this afternoon, in fact my wife and I agreed it was the best we had had as we like to go for a roast at least one Sunday in the month. Unfortunately we didn’t do it justice as we had a prawn cocktail starter which was also very nice but filling. I’m sure we will return in the not too distant future.

Our Christmas dinner at Essence was perfect in every way. The food was absolutely delicious and perfectly served. The staff were very warm and friendly. All the thoughtful little extras were much appreciated. Everything was memorable and special and we may make this a family Christmas tradition!

We have eaten in many pubs and restaurants in the area and the White Hart is consistently the best in this part of East Sussex.
