The Troll Pub opened on October 19th 2011, underneath the 2nd Street Bridge in a 135 year old space directly next to the YUM Center on historic Whiskey Row. The Troll Pub is a subterranean retreat that features a Gastro-pub style menu with a wide selection of great tasting food items, craft beer, local artwork, and an overall atmosphere unique to Louisville. Varanese settled in Louisville because of its successful independent dining scene, and he believes that the people of Louisville will appreciate fresh ingredients, prepared with a creative flair and a culturally diverse menu. Varanese’s eclectic menu boasts an array of options from stuffed grape leaves, and fried green tomato salad, to new signature entrées: the seared boneless pork chop, and caramelized orange salmon. Finish with a fried banana accompanied by a house-made oatmeal cookie dough ice cream dessert. This New American style restaurant will comfortably seat 150 guests between its bar, dining room and four seasons patio. The four seasons patio of Varanese is an addition to the building, which has a dramatic 20-foot slate water wall. Caesar salad was small and only had green leaves so no crispness. Had the Brown and Duck Breast all were good but noting to write home about. Very beautiful dining room and the staff was very pleasant.

We had a fantastic dinner. I was hosting some business friends. Our servers were warm and friendly. Had excellent recommendations for the very significant menu (meaning lots of great options!). There was a live music performer and he was great! It was a bit too loud to think and hear. But, it was cozy and delicious. I had a specialty cocktail (there was a contest!). It was great. A little bit tiny for a fairly big price. But good!
