We made a reservation at Altius to celebrate our anniversary about 3 weeks in advance. Based on the availability of times on the website when we booked, there appeared to be a lot availability. While I understand window seats cannot be guaranteed, we specifically requested one in advance and noted we were coming to celebrate our anniversary. We did not receive a window seat and actually were seated at one of the worst tables in the entire restaurant (upper level in back of private dining area). I asked if we could wait for a better table and was told it would be over an hour. We were really disappointed by where we were sat as we came to celebrate an important milestone, which we made the restaurant aware of in advance. Our server was great and we enjoyed the food.

My husband thought his food was a five. Mine was a four. Great service and beautiful restaurant. Kind of pricey, but food portions were good!

Delectable, delicious food, excellent service, amazing view and atmosphere, cocktails, caviar, fun flavored popcorn, perfection of bread, burrata, salmon mouse, seabass, halibut, chicken and beef, vegtables, sauces, salads and desserts-for a birthday or any day it is our family’s favorite in Pittsburgh PA.

We visited Altius on a Friday evening at the end of a three day mini-vacation in Pittsburgh. I had set our reservation for 6:15, on the assumption this would allow sufficient travel from the Frick Museum. As it turns out, we arrived 45 minutes early and were promptly seated, which we greatly appreciated. The seating areas on both floors provide excellent views from every table; we were seated on the lower floor. (Views matter here, as the restaurant is perched on the top of Mt. Washington with sweeping vistas overlooking Pittsburgh and the juncture of the three rivers.) The bar is on the lower floor, but in no way produced noise or energy disruptive to our meal. The wait staff are outstanding; highly attentive, knowledgeable, and skilled in the art of how (and how not) to attend to every need before you have to ask, without creating a presence that is overbearing. The staff also work as an integrated team, with serving, attending, and clearing done quickly and with precision. Ah, the food - suffice it to say that every dish was outstanding, presentation was superb, and quantities that were more than sufficient for this couple (who, granted, eat somewhat to the lighter side). Pre and post dinner 'surprise gifts' of food from the chef were excellent, as well as adding to the level of attentiveness one feels from the entire establishment. We highly recommend Altius for a special occasion or for just an enjoyable night on the town. As an added bonus (at least for us) the restaurant is no more than 100 feet from the upper station of the Duquesne Incline - always a nice way to start and end a meal at the top of Mt. Washington. A plus regarding the incline is the door and steps that take you down to a small museum overlooking the lift equipment. A minus regarding the incline is the removal of the stairs that used to take you from the lower parking lot directly to the lower station. Pay at the meters, but park at the north end of the lot to lessen the walk.
