An exceptionally stylish supper club, civilized speakeasy, a sophisticated saloon. Each of these "personae" is housed in a soaring two-story interior distinguished by a gently curving mahogany bar, fluted columns with ornate capitals, stunning original art, plush banquettes, cozy booths, starched linens, glittering glasses, and polished flatware.
Overall, the ambiance is pure 1930's and 1940's - tasteful art moderne reminiscent of the glory days of Cunard and French Line ships. Fashionable and glamorous are the hallmarks. Trendy is simply not a part of the BIX culture.
The clientele at BIX ranges from San Francisco movers-and-shakers to "savvy travelers" - owner Doug Biederbeck's term for the many diners in the know from out of town who patronize his establishment.
All of them step from the featureless alley into another world - a world of superb cookery and libations, of sparkling service, of stylish nostalgia, of polished live jazz. That world is BIX.

Celebrated my partners birthday and visiting San Francisco. Drank some of the best martinis we’ve ever had. Loved the ambience and music was great!! Food was very flavorful and so delicious! Definitely coming here again when we visit SF!

We had a 9pm reservation and were not seated until 9:30. The manager comp’d an appetizer which was nice. Our waitstaff was excellent. My daughter’s truffle burger was undercooked. Ordered medium and served rare. My rock cod was tasty but super small portion. Banana bread pudding was excellent. I’ve been a loyal Bix customer since the mid-90’s. This is the first time we’ve experienced anything less than amazing food and service. Hopefully just an off night.

We had a wonderful time. The food, drinks, setting and live music were all amazing. We had 1 entree (wagyu steak), 4 sides/aps and 2 cocktails and it was just under $200 before tip. Honestly not bad at all for such a well put together super club experience. Great place for a date or dinner with close friends!

First time at BIX. We were there with locals who have owned some bars and clubs in the SF area. Even they commented on the experience..

Bix is a somewhat obscure SF gem. Sexy, cool, romantic, yummy.

This is a lovely restaurant. The food was not very good. The caesar salad was small and uninteresting. The short ribs were dried out, had a very thick and odd sauce and the mushrooms with them tasted like they had fake smoke flavor. The bartender was fantastic but our waiter was disinterested and rushed us through service. I would love to return, but will only have a drink at the bar. I hope Bix steps it up.

Magnifique! I took my father and our older cousin who were both visiting San Francisco to Bix for an evening on the town in honor of his birthday (Capricorn energy!)....They were surprised to wander down Gold Alley to step into such a fabulous space with its high ceilings, paintings, and details from the turns of both centuries (19th/20th and 20th/21st). My Perfect Manhattan with organic marichino cherry was...perfect. We indulged in trout rillettes, deviled eggs, and shrimp cocktail...then black cod, beef short rib, and mussels + clams....chef's kiss! The live music truly made the Saturday evening atmosphere...first the piano player, next set a stand up bass player joined, and third set a drummer joined in, building a lovely evening of live jazz to accompany a spectacular birthday din din in Jackson Square. We had smiles of satiation on our faces as we headed off to nearby North Beach for a cappuccino to end our soiree. Grazie per tutti, Bix. XO
