Inspired by the warmth and vibrancy of Jamaica’s culture and people, Chubby's Jamaican Kitchen is a take on traditional Jamaican cooking balanced with relevant culinary twists. Co-founded as a passion project by Gusto 54 founder Janet Zuccarini and Angela Lawrence, Gusto 54’s Chief Culture Officer, Chubby’s is a celebration of their long friendship, and their love and respect for the island’s food and all the amazing Jamaican cooks they know.

Located in a circa-1890 row house re-envisioned by Partisans Architects and interior designer Wendy Haworth, Chubby’s boasts two floors of seating, two bars, and two outdoor patios. It melds old and new, inside and out to create a transporting dining experience complete with delicious Caribbean cooking, eclectic design and soulful hospitality. Chubby's is also a Michelin Guide CA - rated restaurant.

As a Caribbean living in America this food was very underwhelming. We ordered the oxtail which were tiny and not tender. The rice and peas seemed more like rice with beans in it and was very dry. I had the escovitch snapper and it was amazing. Overall nothing to brag about back in the states or in Jamaica.

Food was amazing, we got the homemade patties and the spicy beef was the best out of the variety. We got the saltfish Mac and cheese and oxtail stew for dinner and the Mac and cheese was probably the best I’ve ever had. The service was mediocre, we ordered drinks and a bottle of water and the food hit the table before the water and the server wasn’t very attentive or social.

Really cool vibe and delish food. I ordered the oxtail stew which was great. I gave it 4 out of 5 as the flavors and portion were good, although the meat was still a bit tough, and price point wise wasn’t any better than what I’ve had at fast food restaurants like Island Foods.

I don’t know where to start because it was nothing short of an amazing experience. Food, drinks, and service were all immaculate. We came into town for a birthday celebration and this restaurant helped us kick it off. We started with the jerk wings and ackee and saltfish bites and the first bite reminded me of home. Our entrees included the curry chicken and jerk shrimp and I don’t think we left anything in the plate. The flavors of the curry chicken were satisfying and paired very well with the jasmine rice. If I could recommend any drink on the menu, get the Jamaican Mule!!!
