Izakaya Den is Denver’s popular Japanese gastropub, modeled after the lively after hours establishments found throughout Japan. The restaurant is located on South Pearl Street and is the second restaurant of the Kizaki brothers, founders and owners of Sushi Den.



The menu is arranged in a tapas style, serving traditional Japanese small plates along with dishes infused with international flavors and textures. The more traditional Japanese offerings include sashimi and nigiri, sourced from daily fish shipments from around the globe, along with dumplings and noodle dishes. The global cuisine experiments with a bevy of different flavors including unique items such as Grilled Panzanella Salad (jumbo lump crab, toasted focaccia, local goat cheese, pistachios, plum wine vinaigrette), Kobe Beef Sliders (seared foie gras, pomme frittes). A gluten-free menu is also available along with a popular weekday happy hour from 5 to 6:30 pm.

                                                    It had been a few years since we’d been to ID, and we won’t be back. The dishes were subpar, some of the nigiri was especially fishy, and the service was painfully slow - over two hours for a party of two. Snobby to say, but paper menus at the table should have been the tip off that things had changed, and not for the better. What a let down.

                                                    Wanted to love it. Sushi was good! Server only quickly asked how everything was and some people said good but I twice I said the food was cool. He was busy and not listening or making eye contact. It was cool temp wise and we ordered ribeye and potatoes - 4 of us. I tried to tell him twice without making anyone uncomfortable, as it was my bday and I didn’t want to bring attention o the fact that I was disappointed . And he forgot my friend’s drink 3 times. We flagged down another server and got it. Other than that, everything was great!

                                                    Outstanding service, as always. Cocktails were great. The seared Patagonian red shrimp and seared toro were amazing.

                                                    The service was extremely slow and unorganized. We ended up stacking our dishes to the side as they had been sitting for well over 15 minutes. The food was average at best which hasn’t typically been our experience at Izakaya or Sushi Den. Definitely felt like C level service on a Tuesday.
