Between the central locale afforded by its gracious home in the landmark Lord Elgin Hotel, a warm and yet contemporary ambience, a locally sourced menu and a casual-to-sophisticated stocked cellar, Forty-One has become one of Ottawa’s top new restaurants.

Named Forty-One in recognition of the year, 1941, that the Lord Elgin was built, the restaurant features a modern environment and classic menu that is a perfect match for connecting with new and familiar faces. Guests are able to relax in the inviting lounge with flat screen TVs and large windows overlooking Elgin Street or enjoy an intimate dinner or a group get together in the dining area. With a capacity of close to 150, the restaurant features booths and banquette seating to allow flexibility to accommodate guest needs whether they are popping in for lunch, a quick after-work cool-down, a pre-theatre warm-up or an evening night cap. Forty-One also includes a private dining room for up to 30 guests.

Our reservation was for 11:30am ahead of a 1pm show at the NAC. We were given breakfast menus and when I asked for lunch menus I was told rather rudely that the kitchen would not serve lunch until 12nn. It took over half an hour for 2 orders of eggs Benny and one omelette to be served, without garnishes or sides. The plates looked really bare. A disappointing experience.

Food was excellent! Shared the beet salad and salmon entree. Salmon was cooked perfectly! Would definitely recommend.

Overall we had a negative experience. It started with a relatively empty restaurant but we had to wait a few minutes at the seating stand before anyone showed up to seat us. Once seen the hostess seemed confused on where to seat us. Our server was rarely at our table. They were gone for at least 30 minutes at one point. We were served water and 1 round of drinks. We went through the water and drinks relatively quickly. The drinks were never offered to be refreshed and the waters were eventually refilled by someone else completely after our meals were finished. One of our party was never given part of her meal. The food was ok at best: 2 of the dishes were decent and the other 2 were missing parts or overcooked. Towards the end of the meal a small music group set up right behind us and while the music was nice, it was too loud for a small area.

I had the fish sandwich with garden salad. The sandwich was really tasty. The salad was pretty and had a nice light flavoured vinaigrette but the curled veg on top were impossible to get onto your fork properly and then into your mouth without dropping. But still ok

Very fine dining experience, great food, excellent service and calm ambiance. Portions are HUGE, we had to bring back half our plates!

Late night dinner upon arrival in Victoria. Busy dining room even at 10pm, one of the few open. Hamburgers and club sandwiches hit the spot. Waiter was good at food ordering and service except no ideas about mocktails and a delay in getting the bill. The Elgin Hotel was welcoming to non guests

Very friendly and helpful servers. Unfortunate that the chef cannot prepare french fries that are edible. The rest of the food was OK and the atmosphere was quite nice. Great location for walking tours.

The service and food were both good. Our waiter made recommendations which we chose and were very pleased with our choice. Restaurant is very clean and well lit

Really lovely place. The food was good. The service was excellent. It is also so wonderful to be able to talk at the table in a fairly quiet environment. I highly recommend it.
