Located in the historic Fulton Market district of Chicago’s West Loop neighborhood, il Carciofo is a Roman Italian restaurant drawing inspiration from the restaurants and markets in one of Chef Joe's favorite cities, Rome. The restaurant offers a seasonal menu of elevated yet familiar Italian fare with traditional antipasti, Roman-style pizzas, hand-rolled pastas produced daily in a dedicated pasta lab and market-driven mains that highlight the season's bounty.

    We were very excited to get a reservation, but unfortunately the experience fell short. Food - Pesto pulsi: 7/10 Good, but needed more flavor. Pesto Gnocchetti - 7/10 again, this was good and the bite was great but the flavoring was just not there. Ravioli Pomodoro - 3/10 this was the least favorite. The cheese on top made the dish far too salty and the filling in the ravioli was not flavorful. Drinks- Old Fashioned - 8/10, great drink! Espresso Martini - 9/10, maybe my most favorite one yet! Dessert - Pistachio Gelato - 9/10, delicious! Service: 9/10, Alejandro was great! I’d come back for drinks but sadly not the food. Not worth the price point.

    Mortadella pizza is amazing in my opinion better than the similar dish we tried in Rome. Pesto Gnocchi and carbonara were our favorite pastas. Gelato is the best we have had - we loved the hazelnut/ chocolate one.

    I rarely feel compelled to write reviews, but the service at il Carciofo was AMAZING, and their dedication and joy deserves to be sung. Our server was the most attentive and sweet individual who made our children (9 and 11 y.o.) feel so included and fancy (in a fun way), taking the time to explain various items on the menu and guide them through the menu. And the kitchen staff - who work in an open venue - were fast, having fun, talking to patrons, and just brought such happiness to us. I expected the restaurant to have delicious food (and it did); but the service was truly memorable.

    Food portion was too small. I ordered tire forno guiiseppe. It was more like an appetizer. The halibut was a nice size. Everything else was extremely small. Not worth what I paid. Was charged for birthday dessert. Didn’t like it. Don’t think I will go back. Nice ambience.

    The service really needs some work. The hostess’ seemed bothered by our presence. The food was sub par at best. Our server was avoiding asking us how we enjoyed the food and we ended up not eating most items. Will look forward to trying again after they’ve worked out the issues from opening

    I’m a big fan of Joe Flamm’s restaurant Rosemary, so I was really excited to try his new restaurant. The restaurant itself is beautiful, but the food was … meh. Nothing was bad, so to speak, but nothing we had was amazing. The signature artichoke appetizer was greasy and lacked flavor, the Rosso pizza had great dough/crust but overall was simple and didn’t have the flavor a dish this simple needs, the Gnocchi pesto was good but for the price point I would go down the street to Monteverde and have an excellent gnocchi pesto. The best dishes we had were the Funghi side dish, which had lots of great flavor and the Pistachio gelato. I don’t know if the gelato was made in house, but it was the best I have ever had. I would go back, sit at the bar, and just order a drink and gelato. Again, the restaurant wasn’t bad, but in a neighborhood that has so many great options it was underwhelming. I’d go to Rosemary or Monteverde and be excited and happy to spend the money.

    The food was very spot on to the mission the restaurant has set. The floor and flow of the tables goes well either way how the restaurant gives out food.

    Great food and atmosphere. Big restaurant. Great apps, especially the Carciofi, lamb ribs (small portion tho), and baccala fritti. My only disappointment with the food was dessert. Nothing sounded overwhelmingly great, so we went with the zabaglione, which was served cold, not warm like I’d had it before. I should’ve asked how it was served, I would’ve gotten gelato or the zeppele instead. More, or better, choices would be great. We will still go back.
