It's A Southern Thing is our owner's personal love letter to The South. We've proudly served Downtown Durham since 2017 and are thrilled to expand and open up our second location here at Ellis Crossing. Known for our unique take on traditional Southern fair, we welcome you with a laid back atmosphere, Southern hospitality, delicious craft cocktails and thoughtfully created, scratch made dishes. From our best-selling Shrimp and Grits to Sweet Tea Brined Pork Chops, Fried Green Tomatoes, Collard Greens, Chicken and Waffle Skewers and everything in between, you will find familiar flavors presented in an original way. Offering brunch and dinner seven days a week, with extended bar hours and a private dining area for small functions, we invite you to come in, stay a while and let us show you why so many customers love being part of our It's A Southern Thing family.

I had the build your own scrambled eggs with grits, which are amazing, and sausage patties. All four meals we had were excellent! I highly recommend this restaurant!!

Better than the downtown Durham location. Parking is a breeze. The food and service were really good.

Our server, Alannah was amazing! The food was delicious and the service was fast!!! We enjoyed the entire experience. We will definitely return.

The food was amazing, the restaurant was quiet during lunch on a weekday, I will definitely return! The flapjacks charcuterie board, biscuits, and sausage gravy were delicious!

The food was good. I did look over the menu before arriving and then again once I had been seated. It was not until I went to order that I found out that the drink menu had changed but wasn’t updated online and I was handed the wrong one when I was sat so the drink I wanted couldn’t be made. Aside from that, we had a great experience. Everything was good and our server was attentive.

This was my first time visiting It's a Southern Thing and I'm pretty sure it won't be my last. If you are in the mood for minimal frills but excellent southern cuisine, look no further. We went for brunch where bottomless mimosas are an option, and the waitress made sure the glasses were continually topped off. We ordered an assortment of items from Shrimp and Grits, to the Two Fat Boys and more and everything came out hot! The noise levels were up but I think that was mostly the table beside us. When they left the volume was reasonable once more. But all in all this is a 4.5-5 star restaurant. I will certainly be back.
