Chef Anthony Walsh is the driving force behind Leña, a stylish homage to South American cuisine, with unique Spanish and Italian influences. Named after Chef Walsh’s mother-in-law, Elena, from whom he draws a wealth of culinary inspiration, Leña spans three floors at the Saks Fifth Avenue flagship store at Yonge & Richmond.

    I finally decided to give Lena a second chance after attempting to dine a few years back ( had to leave after waiting for a server for almost half an hour), and I wish I didn’t. Slow service, average cocktails and very low quality of food. Beef tartare was okay so as empanadas, ceviche was basically a salad with quinoa and a few flakes of smoked fish. And the biggest disappointment of the night was $125 seafood paella, which was burnt. The saddest part of it all was that instead of trying to fix it, our server decided to educate me that paella is supposed to be that way. $350 for one of the worst dining experiences in Toronto.

    Fantastic food and service, I was expecting based on other reviews. The flavours were complex and balanced. What was unexpected (and a delight!) was that Leña Restaurant also served excellent coffee and non-alcoholic cocktails. I get the impression that every detail of the menu had been carefully thought out.

    Overall experience was mediocre. Our waiter disappeared for a long period of time and thus water glasses were left empty, and we were not checked on. I had a cocktail that tasted soapy. I didn’t drink it but wasn’t asked about it. Salmon was overcooked. Burgers, avocado salad and fries were great. Took 30 minutes for wine to arrive. Sangria had an odd taste. All 4 diners were not impressed. Had to go look for someone to get our bill after waiting an extended period.

    Overall, the food and service were fantastic. I have a medical condition that prevents me from eating quickly, so the server and kitchen were very accommodating when pacing the meal and provided an amazing level of service. I highly recommend Lena if you are looking for a great night out.

    We were hoping to be sitting on the main floor at a booth. It’s a beautiful space there. But we were upstairs. Food and service were really good but not the same ambience at all.
