Magna Kainan is the passion project of Chef Carlo Lamagna, Food & Wine’s 2021 Best New Chef and 2022 James Beard finalist and Chef Max Mackissock (Michelin recommended A5 Steakhouse and Michelin Bib Gourmand awarded Ash’Kara). Kainan, which means “eatery” in Tagalog, will be a refined, woodfired approach to Filipino comfort food..
At Magna Kainan, just like our sister restaurant in Portland, Oregon, Magna Kusina, our mission is to share the vibrant flavors and rich traditions of Filipino cuisine and culture through a contemporary lens. I dined here last night. It was really cold outside, so of course had to be bundled up and I love that they had a coat check behind the hostess stand. What I did not like is that when reserving on OpenTable, you were asked if you want to be at the bar or a table top and you choose which reservation works best for you. I booked this well enough in advance and chose to sit at a table, arrived on time for my reservation and was sat at the bar. I was uncomfortable the entire time, but the restaurant was packed, so I knew there was no point in making a stink over being sat at the bar. The service was impeccable and everything we eat and drink was delicious.

Overall, the food and service was amazing. If I were to go back, I would definitely want to avoid the community table, as it was a little m cramped and the table is so wide that it was very hard to hear.

The crab noodles are absolutely phenomenal. The octopus was not good- surprisingly underwhelming. I had a strange experience where I ordered dessert, the server said he’d be right back with the dessert, but then brings me the check instead… which doesn’t have the dessert on it so I thought maybe they comp-ed it so left an extra $10 tip (the price of the dessert)- I waited around for 20 mins for the dessert, and it never came and the server disappeared. It was so strange - so then I just left lol. not sure I’ll go back. Hope they enjoy the extra tip for nothing! The rest of the menu looks great.

An interesting take on Filipino classics, but tends to fall short quite a bit in value, flavor and experience. The pandesal was cold in the middle, lamb skewer immensely bitter and many of the dishes just failing to impress for their $$$.

I had never been here before, but my first time was for their new year’s eve party. I don’t know what I was expecting, but it wasn’t it. Free seating was fine. We got a table right away. We were very excited for the karaoke, but when I walked up and asked if I could sign up, they turned me away and said they’d find me. All the staff seemed extremely overwhelmed and unprepared for the chaos. The flyer was very misleading. We were under the impression we would be getting champagne and fried chicken for the $30 door fee. $30 for bottomless champagne isn’t bad, but they didn’t give you anything to mix it with. I’d rather have a beer. We still ordered a “bucket” of chicken which was actually just a cup of chicken. The food was very expensive for what it was.

We went for NYE and had an absolute blast!! The food was incredible, the service was incredible, the staff as a whole were so friendly and fun, and the vibes were fantastic with all the drinks and karaoke and dancing. 1000/10 we will absolutely be coming back here. We ordered 1-2 of everything they had on the menu and we did not have a single bad bite. Best new restaurant in Denver hands down!

Great food! If you haven’t tried Filipino food, this is a must and this restaurant is the place to do it! Chef came by and talked to us for a bit. Enjoyed talking to him and how his life and how he became such an acclaimed, award winning chef!
