Partners Matt Kelly and Josh “Skinny” DeCarolis are proud to offer Mothers & Sons, a trattoria in downtown Durham featuring regional Italian food with seasonal sensibility. DeCarolis introduces the first restaurant in the South to focus on fatta a mano —handmade pasta.
Mothers and Sons offers antipasti dishes such seasonal bruschettas or smoked octopus. Choose from primi dishes like the bucatini al amatriciana, squid ink tonnarelli or rigatoni alla norma and secondi dishes like the bistecca alla floretina and eggplant parmigiana. Dishes are made with seasonal ingredients so menus may change depending on when you visit. An extensive Italian wine list, dozens of amari as well as an imaginative cocktail list with an italian flair assures there will be a drink that will complement your meal perfectly.

    The restaurant was packed on a rainy Wednesday night. Food was excellent pasta is homemade. The steak was cooked in a wood-burning stove. Entire meal including service was first rate. Happy we ate here.

    fantastic service, and the food was fantastic. The only thing I can say is that maybe a busier night because I went on a weekday that the noise would be a little overwhelming because of the sound bouncing off the high ceilings, the food was worth it, but on a Saturday night, maybe don’t take a first date here ahaha!

    These folks know what they’re doing. The handmade pasta lives up to its reputation, and our server was so thoughtful and engaging and made great recommendations from wine to pasta to appetizers. The squid ink tonnarelli is a must if you enjoy seafood. I’m already daydreaming about going back!

    M&S creates an authentic Italian trattoria experience - food, drink and service - in downtown Durham. The food reflects the diversity of Italy’s regional cuisines, and the beverage program is the best set of Italian offerings in NC. The breadth and organization of the wine list impresses, but don’t miss the vermouth and Amari lists. You may have to visit more than once! Bravo!

    1. Our server was Kayla and she was AWESOME! Full run down on the dishes, drinks and Specials, She was truly a 5 star performer!!! 2. The food was delicious, I had the Cavatelli Pugliesi, a light pasta and sausage dish with a buttery broth and the perfect kiss of spice. My wife had the Lasagna Bianco she said her dish was delicious but a little heavy on the mushrooms for her palate. Our party also ordered the Eggplant Parmigiana and Hearth Roasted Chicken they enjoyed ever bite with nothing left on their plates. 3. Dim lit dinning room making things comfy, cosy and the delicious aroma of the kitchen was filled within the dinning room with just a kiss of the fire in the hearth. They had a full house for our visit which left the dinning room a bit noisy at times. If noise is an issue for you go early, they really filled up around 7 pm… 4. They have a full bar with a great wine list!!! 5. If you like Italian dishes, you HAVE TO give Mothers & Sons a try!

    We have wanted to dine here since we first started thinking about moving to the Triangle. Sorry to say it was a disappointment. We felt like an afterthought from the time we arrived. The server was new & put forth respectable effort. We had a microburst of attention when ordering a nice bottle of wine, but when our food was ready, the “food runner” dropped it on our table like he was disposing of something hard to hold onto.
