For years, owners Nat Ongsangkoon & Dia Khanthongthip have dreamed of bringing Thai market foods to DC, and are excited about the canvas Soi 38 presents. As natives of Bangkok, Thailand, they grew up relishing trips to the night market for some of the best food in Thailand, and are excited to bring this collection of street foods to Washington, DC.

Inspired by the underground eateries around Bangkok’s night markets, Soi 38 features creative Thai street foods, hearty Thai favorites and a bar program featuring draft and bottled cocktails to DC’s West End neighborhood.

The name Soi 38 is based on the iconic street food district and night market of the same name in Bangkok. As evening falls in Thailand, the Soi 38 night market transforms into a high energy, open-air food market crowded with stalls and rickety furniture where vendors dish out authentic Thai food favorites until the early-morning hours.

We waited close to an hour for our meal. Food was just okay. We were hoping for much better. I will go back again and try them one more time to see if we have a better experience.

We were there on a Monday night. The location is easy to walk to from the metro but in a quiet neighborhood. It looks like they have an outdoor area for better evenings but it was raining that day. The food was delicious and the prices fair. We will most certainly go again.

I bought a fish catch of day, rockfish. However, I thought $38 was for a skinny one was too much.

Happy hour was a very good deal (a bottle of wine for $25), but the calamari was overcooked. The food was okay, but not as good as I expected from such a celebrated restaurant. The restaurant itself was very comfortable and the service was very high quality. Would recommend as a good place to stop for happy hour, but maybe not a great place for dinner.

This was my first time dining at Soi 38 since their Michelin distinction, which was proudly advertised on the door. Unfortunately, the food was just alright, prices were steep (basic noodle entrees starting around $18) and the meal didn't compare to those at other Michelin guide restaurants in the city.
