The Black Horse Inn is a beautiful country pub, located just off the A283 between Petworth and Fittleworth, in the idyllic hamlet of Byworth.

The roaring log fire in the bar, with original beams and bare-board flooring, is the perfect place to warm up and escape the winter elements.

Come Summer time the garden is thriving and the ideal spot to enjoy a leisurely lunch overlooking the rolling hills of the Shimmings Valley.

Please note:
For parties with 8 or more guests debit/credit card details will be reqired to confirm your booking. In the event of a 'no-show' or cancellation within 48hrs a charge of £5 per head will debited from the card used.
Dogs are not permitted in our restaurant area, however, well behaved dogs on a lead are welcome in the bar area.
Unfortunately bar tables cannot be reserved.
We will try our best to fulfil your seating requests however we cannot guarantee that specific tables will be available.

The Black Horse is an unspoilt old pub with an open fire in the bar. It is always very welcoming and we had a very nice meal with friends this week. All our main courses were delicious and nicely presented and the service was excellent. Definitely worth trying if you have not been - it is considerably more reliable than many other pubs in the area.

Four of us had lunch at the Black Horse. One of our 4 is very 'picky' and critical, so I was apprehensive! but he and the other 3 of our party LOVED the food AND the service from Ben. We would 100% recommend going, the pork belly being amazing, as was the soup (potato and coconut). Excellent.

Sorry the food wasn’t good, the mash potatoes wasn’t real potatoes, the soup didn’t taste like potatoe n leek We did see someone rushing back into the kitchen with a full tescos bag, not good But the staff were friendly A large group arrived with dogs in the resturant area, some people wouldn’t like this but it didn’t bother us Wouldn’t come back

I had a vegan butternut squash tagine which was disappointing. It was basically tinned tomatoes with a few bits of veg and some curry powder in it and was swimming in liquid. My friend ordered a pie and asked for some extra gravy but it took so long to arrive she had finished her meal. Just very disappointing.

Great value. Excellent service and probably the best steak and ale pie I’ve ever had! Views out the back are superb. Only improvement would be a little music in the background (maybe there normally is) and more thought to the lighting and finish inside the building. We would definitely go back again.

Such a treat to have a vegetarian/vegan choice. It is very rare to find in a pub and much appreciated.

We had a fantastic family lunch. We were welcomed on arrival and nothing was too much trouble. With three children in the group they couldn't be more accommodating and didn't rush us as we were there all afternoon and all food and service was brilliant.
