   Our wonderful lunch was spoiled when a man at a table near us lit up a cigar. Since when is smoking allowed in restaurants again? It smelled awful and he puffed on it almost constantly so that we were engulfed with smoke. Is it even legal to smoke in a restaurant in Houston. Why was it allowed? I’m not sure if we’ll be back or not. It was simply disgusting.

   Toulouse is fast turning into Houston's see-and-be-seen place. It helps that it is in the glamorous River Oaks District which is getting even lovelier by the day. The food is good value for money. It doesn't cost an arm and a leg which is pleasantly surprising for an upscale place. The waitstaff are extra courteous and helpful. There's great live music. Do dress well or you'll feel like the peasant among it's well-heeled and preening patrons.

   After living in Europe, my wife and I always enjoy lunch at Toulouse. This time she had the seared tuna salad, and I had the crab cake benedict. Both were excellent as usual.

   Ordered duck confit, expected a crispy skin, too soft and greasy instead. Taste and presentation of the dish were great though.

    Despite coming here many times, this is the first time we have received such bad service from our guests. The waiter who especially took care of the first table they passed was very very rude. The table we passed afterwards had neither a tablecloth nor was the table cleaned of leaves. The calamari that came did not even have calamari in it. The coffee came minutes later. I gave a 30% tip just to be nice to my guests, but the service I received yesterday did not deserve this. The urgent team also needs to fix it during the week.
