Ula is a beautiful European Mediterranean restaurant and tapas bar in San Francisco. Sip your martini or quality wine with a seafood-centric menu that has a focus on raw, roasted, and grilled fish and various roasted and grilled meats, pasta, gluten-free, vegetarian, and vegan selections. The restaurant is maximalist art deco with fixtures that depict jellyfish, oysters, and grand maritime vessels. Just a hop from Union Square, the delightfully vintage dining room begs to be paired with a nostalgic trolley ride and a stroll through the heart of the city. We went for Thanksgiving and ordered the prefix menu. Our waitress made a mistake and put in for all our food to come at once which was a nightmare. When I asked what happened and why our bread and olives never arrived and why we got one salad, one main dish and all the appetizers she got offended because I guess it was her mistake and she didn't want to face it. The owner came to our table and informed us we made her cry and how could he fix our situation. We ended up with a new waiter who did not do what we asked and so somehow instead of all new salads and soups which never arrived we got our main courses ice cold and they packed our soup to go. One member of our table didn't get his food until after we all got ours, so that was uncomfortable as we all wanted to break bread together. Even though out main dishes had been sitting and were cold. The food was fantastic. My fillet of beef was cooked to perfection. My sister-in-law ordered the turkey and mashed potatoes and stuffing and she said it was pretty good. The vegetarian choices were great and the vegetarian food was good. My niece ordered the salmon and it was raw. The Tapas were amazing. Favorites included the beet salad, garlic shrimp, truffle fries minus the truffles and bruschetta. We never got the soup so I can't say how it tasted. Overall the kitchen and wait staff need to work on timing better. Food was fantastic and even though service was tricky we all agreed we'd eat here again just maybe not for Thanksgiving. We were so full we took our dessert to go!!

So happy to find this restaurant. It’s great place to dine especially if you’ll be attending a show at the SF Playhouse. The decorations are superb along w the food and service!

The decor inside the restaurant was breathtaking, and the service was above and beyond. The food was good, but the portions were small, especially since it was expensive. I did expect more than four ravioli, for example.

Ula was highly rated and located right next to our hotel. We were excited to try it. Food was disappointing: our filet was way over done - it came well done and we ordered medium rare. It was also swimming in gravy sauce. Our ravoli was unremarkable. It was also swimming in sauce with tasteless fish on top.

Honestly the photos look a lot cooler, the place is an interesting place, it’s cool with the design, but the food was OK, the service was very slow, we didn’t get greeted for about 25 minutes when we got there, some of the food was late in coming, we ended up being there way longer than we needed to, just so we can finish eating. We didn’t get checked on that much and there were literally only a few other tables/guests there. Every other place was booked up on a Saturday night, this place was half empty, so that should’ve been a warning perhaps. Bar was good, but I expected a little bit more out of the food, like the filet mignon, and halloumi cheese were whatever. The beef tartare was good on the side of bread was also very good. Not bad, but will try other places next time.

The staff was friendly but the server didn't know the difference between basic red and white wine varieties. The beverage menu listed items that were no longer available. The digestif I ordered came in chilled class and after my guest finished her dessert. Port should not be served chilled. Prices were much higher than reasonable for even simple menu items. We shared a pasta dish, an appetizer and had two cocktails. The price was $140. I was unable to express my dissatisfaction with the subpar service as a 20% gratuity was included.
