Sushi of Gari Upper West Side Location, as Gari Columbus. In 1997 Chef Masatoshi “Gari” Sugio opened the first Sushi of Gari and introduced New Yorkers to a new way to enjoy sushi. With the Gari style, no longer was soy sauce the only accompaniment, and in order to get guests to fully enjoy the fish chef added elements of surprise that came in the way of a sauce or other type of topping.

Entire staff — front entry hostess, service staff, master sushi chefs — is wonderful, helpful, and kind as can be.  Absolutely our favorite sushi place in the city, and has been for 15 years.

                                                                                                                        Sushi of Gari was the perfect place to meet a friend on a Tuesday night. Smooth sake, tuna topped with creamy tofu, salmon with tomato, red snapper with Thai salad, and crunchy eel were among our favorite signature pieces. And a classic yellowtail with scallion hand roll was just incredible. Welcoming wait staff, excellent service, quiet and relaxing ambiance and fresh fish served elegantly.
