                                                                    I travel for business frequently. Two months ago, I had lunch at The Grill at The Lodge at Torrey Pines and the food was average. Last night, after a long flight, I tried it again. The service was good, however my hamburger was raw, cold inside, and not edible. The server was accommodating and had it remade. This time it was cooked, however, I was concerned about freshness and had no flavor. I could not rate the food higher than a C-. The Manager was very kind and did not charge for the burger. I left a nice gratuity because of the service.

                                                                    The fresh Ahi tuna was a bit drowned in mayo. I could sort of taste the freshness and subtle flavor but it was a shame to drown it in ingredients that should be carefully measured. The service was amazing! The drone of military jets was unexpected and startling.

                                                                    I’ve been to The Grill many times and I don’t know what happened last evening. The noise level was out of control with a celebratory group there, which is lovely, but maybe they don’t have to sat in the middle of the dining room so none of us could hear anything but them. My dish came out looking like someone had put very little effort into it. It was the tuna tartar that was supposed to come with wontons, but I had crumbs on the plate. I should’ve sent it back, but I didn’t wanna embarrass the people I was with who were taking me to dinner at my suggestion. I was really disappointed.

                                                                    People are hating the “appreciation” tariff, which was explained to us as a form of tip for the staff working in the kitchen. The 3 retirees with which I dined enjoyed the meal and the service and typically leave a 20% tip behind, but when they saw the appreciation charge, they reduced tipping to 12% for a total of 15%.
