Located in the Old Engine House on the edge of York's Museum Gardens in a riverside setting close to the historic Lendal Bridge, The Star Inn The City has an enviable position, which we aim to match with the best produce God's Own Country has to offer and genuine Yorkshire hospitality for the 'whole package'.

We offer an all day menu which can be enjoyed for both lunch and dinner, as well as serving up breakfast Friday to Sunday, and on Sunday's we serve up our famous Sunday roasts between 12-4pm.

We pride ourselves on being a a food-led celebration destination, with guests being able to enjoy view of the River Ouse from our Garden Room or outside on our riverside terrace. For more intimate occasions we also offer two exclusive Private Dining rooms for celebrations such as graduations, weddings and birthdays.

Great, if somewhat noisy atmosphere which was ideal for New Year's Eve! Service was excellent throughout the evening. Meal fine except for a partridge breast starter that was truly awful - smothered in a thick, glutinous gravy instead of the light sauce it deserves. If you want to find out how partridge should be cooked pick a day when it's on the menu at Paradise in the garden centre in Killinghall! We liked the 8-hour braised ox cheek.

Wonderful evening New Years Eve. Ellen in reservations was amazing and managed to juggle things around and change our arrival time (thank you). The restaurant was bustling full of atmosphere. Staff were welcoming and attentive. Food and wine fabulous and we had a lovely evening. We will definitely be returning- thanks for making our New Years Eve 🤗

This was a treat on New Year's Eve before attending an evening wedding reception for me from my 22 year son, he loves good food as he works in a restaurant. We enjoyed our time in the restaurant lovely service from start to finish. I'd highly recommend the Pumpkin Croustades and pistachio choux bun.

Excellent food , well served in pleasant ambience. Plenty of vegetarian choices and a long and varied wine/drinks list.

The food was amazing, every dish was delicious. Would recommend the ox cheek without hesitation. Potion sizes were perfect. Great selection. The pistachio choux bun was incredible and a healthy portion size. The atmosphere was brilliant, it was busy and there was noise, but nothing that was obtrusive, just made for a great atmosphere. Service was friendly and knowledgeable.
