Located in the Old Engine House on the edge of York's Museum Gardens in a riverside setting close to the historic Lendal Bridge, The Star Inn The City has an enviable position, which we aim to match with the best produce God's Own Country has to offer and genuine Yorkshire hospitality for the 'whole package'.

We offer an all day menu which can be enjoyed for both lunch and dinner, as well as serving up breakfast Friday to Sunday, and on Sunday's we serve up our famous Sunday roasts between 12-4pm.

We pride ourselves on being a a food-led celebration destination, with guests being able to enjoy view of the River Ouse from our Garden Room or outside on our riverside terrace. For more intimate occasions we also offer two exclusive Private Dining rooms for celebrations such as graduations, weddings and birthdays.

,had a thouroughly enjoyable evening, food excellent, staff professional and helpful, special mention for Lotti, warm and engaging personality, made the evening very relaxed and more enjoyable

Disappointing visit this year, food has previously been exceptional but not this time. I chose fish and chips from the menu which was mostly batter and very little fish. Little choice of mains on the market menu. The ambience this year was not as good as normal - we missed the welcoming Christmas tree that’s normally outside the door. Will be sadly looking elsewhere for our next visit to York.

We have eaten at the star many times and always enjoyed it very much. However, unfortunately on this occasion we were very disappointed. We chose items off the A La Carte menu. We both had Scallops with squid ink risotto- the risotto was very highly salted, so much so that we couldn’t taste the delicate scallops. Main course, one of us had Pheasant, which was very nice. The other main meal was halibut with ravioli. The halibut was over cooked and dry and the ravioli was undercooked, tough and chewy. Desert was baked custard, the spiced apples, ice cream and brandy snap were lovely but the custard was very rubbery and although tasted nice the texture was wrong. Please don’t be put off by this review, we have had some lovely meals at the star.

We had a very relaxing breakfast. The waitress was especially cheerful and even gave us some of her marmalade!😋

Dinner was fantastic!! Best steak I have ever had, restaurant was beautiful and staff were lovely.

The food was sublime. The atmosphere was great. The service was excellent. We will be returning in the summer! Our waitress was attentive and very friendly. Thank you for a wonderful evening.
