Located in the Old Engine House on the edge of York's Museum Gardens in a riverside setting close to the historic Lendal Bridge, The Star Inn The City has an enviable position, which we aim to match with the best produce God's Own Country has to offer and genuine Yorkshire hospitality for the 'whole package'.

We offer an all day menu which can be enjoyed for both lunch and dinner, as well as serving up breakfast Friday to Sunday, and on Sunday's we serve up our famous Sunday roasts between 12-4pm.

We pride ourselves on being a a food-led celebration destination, with guests being able to enjoy view of the River Ouse from our Garden Room or outside on our riverside terrace. For more intimate occasions we also offer two exclusive Private Dining rooms for celebrations such as graduations, weddings and birthdays.

    Visited on the 1st December for a Sunday Christmas turkey lunch, very festive, staff very friendly, excellent service. Will be back again

    Really enjoyable setting and the staff were wonderful as well. The food was really tasty - though for the Sunday Roast, I'd prefer if the gravy wasn't poured on the Yorkshire pudding as it got soggy. That said, it was a great experience!

    Food and service were excellent. Only two minor observation the roast potatoes were a little tough. The pear crumbles pear was overpowered by the summer fruits . Will still definitely return . Two very minor points dropping a 10/10 to a 9/10 for me .

    Beautiful venue on the banks of the river . Staff very attentive, festive ambience when we visited, food was lovely ( Sunday lunch menu in December) though not outstanding.

    Excellent brunch with the family celebrating a birthday. The food was amazing and the menu catered to all tastes. The staff were welcoming and Katy was a great server who was friendly, helpful and responsive without being intrusive. The restaurant and facilities were very clean and beautifully decorated. A great experience and we will return.

    The Star Inn The City has for a long time been our favourite restaurant in the centre of York. However after our experience on Saturday night it has now lost that standing. The food we ate and the menu seemed by far and away not as good as usual. The vegetarian risotto was nothing more than a tasteless mush and the idea of floating fish and mushy peas in a swamp of curry sauce also fell well short of the usual standards. The choice of desserts also left a lot to be desired. The Yorkshire Pudding starter was however very good. The waitress did all she could to rectify the situation by wiping the risotto off the bill but it still put a damper our 39th wedding anniversary celebrations and the bill was still £157 for the 2 of us. I do hope that the menu can be brought back to previous standards so we can enjoy this great venue once again. Having said this about the food, the ambience and staff were as excellent as usual.
